For the past two days, I have been in Manhattan. Hoping for Spring weather, I packed only two light coats, including a USO cotton jacket that is similar to the ones troops wear in desert climates. Needless to say, that sparked a few conversations from military veterans as I walked the streets of lower Manhattan.
At military posts throughout the world, the USO provides a home away. At more than 130 locations, the USO delivers its special programs and services to our soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines and their families. In recent years, new USO centers have been established in Kuwait, Qatar and Afghanistan, as well at new airport locations at Dallas/Fort Worth, Raleigh/Durham and Denver. I am in the initial stages of establishing a USO at Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW). Although our military presence in the Detroit-area is limited to primarily Selfridge Air National Guard base where all five services have operations, more than 9,000 servicemen and women transit DTW each month.

One of their excellent programs is providing telephone cards to our deployed troops so that they can call home more often. ReplyDeleteI greatly appreciate your efforts in this endeavor. As an active duty Army Staff Sergeant of over 7 years service, I've often found myself stuck in DTW during for layovers in my frequent trips back home to Philadelphia.
An airport of that magnitude and geographic convenience should certainly provide a USO. I think it's great that someone such as yourself is actually doing something about it!

I had not realized that there was a USO in Detroit until just now when I looked for one for my brother-in-law to use when comes home at Christmas. Having used the USO in SF myself, with a husband an infant and toddler in tow, I know how important having a place to rest and shower can be. If we can be of service, please contact us.

Many thanks for your efforts with this project. My husband serves with the Navy ROTC at the University of Notre Dame. Quite often we are routed from South Bend to Detroit with long layovers. A USO is much needed at DTW. Thanks again and God Bless!
ReplyDeleteThanks for trying to get the USO in Detroit. Alot of us come from Michigan and have no where to go. I'm flying home on emergency leave and have no where to sleep. It would be nice if a USO was available in Detroit. In the mean time I'll just find a warm 7-11. Good luck and thanks!
ReplyDeleteThank you for taking the time to establish a USO. Detroit is the closest airport to my home of record and for those 5am flights out it would be nice if I could fly up the day before and have a safe place to stay. I hope you have accomplish this goal.

Thank you for your time trying to establish a USO at DTW. I have never been to DTW, but will be flying there soon on my way to visit my husband who is currently serving on an unaccompanied tour in Korea. I hope that you can soon get the support you need to get this going. We would all greatly appreciate it!
